 As Fair Trade seeks to advance working conditions for farmers and artisans around the world, the goals of unions and Fair Trade have mutual outcomes in protecting workers rights, ensuring safe working conditions, and maintaining fair wages.

The Fair Trade model is focused upon empowering workers through the formation of cooperatives. Through this avenue, producers can voice their concerns regarding working conditions, and the co-operative can collectively represent concerns to owners and managers.

So at your next union meeting, ask whether or not the coffee they're serving is Fair Trade, and if they have an ethical procurement policy in place.
